5 Tools Everyone in the Communication Industry Should be Using!

This post is for all those who are in some way connected to the telecom/communication industry, which is almost all of us!

Let's look at the Top 5 Telecom companies, ranked internationally, as per their market share, according to www.investopedia.com:

 1. China Mobile Ltd.
2. Verizon Communications Inc.
3. AT &T Inc.
4. Vodafone Group PLC.
5. Nippon Telegraph &Telephone Corporation.

In India, we have the following, in order of their market share, listed below:

1. Vodafone-Idea
2. Airtel- Telenor India
3. Jio- Reliance Communication
4. BSNL Mobile
5. Aircel

With digitization, came many challenges, and opportunities for the Communication Industry.  Two of the major demands of the Industry were:

1. OTT- Means Over The Top: Where in one IP address is given access to multiple devices, for e.g. when we get a Jio - Reliance connection, with one portable modem, we can get up to 10 devices connected, at the same time.

2. IoT- Internet of Things- Is the network of physical devices, which have embedded software programs and sensors which enable them to connect to each other such as vehicles, home appliances etc. It also includes cyber-physical networks such as smart homes, smart city, intelligent transport.

One major player, responsible for jolting the Communication Industry, was Apple Computers. We've all heard of Steve Jobs, who co- founded Apple, in 1976, with his friend Woznaik, for Apple I. They became extremely popular, and successful a year later, for Apple II. Steve Job's next launch was NeXT, a computer platform for higher education, and business markets, the rest is history. The most recent products that have flooded the markets, are a sleuth of products, like the iPhone, i Mac, iTunes, Apple store, iPod...etc.. that are borderless, they have overcome cultural barriers and are connecting people all over the world.

With the demands put forth by rapid technological growth, they had to keep up with the overwhelming surge in customers and diversity in internet requirements. In order to survive, they had to upscale their approach. Not only, did they need to make changes, in distribution of their product and services, but also upgrade their human resources, to deal with this rapidly transforming and growing industry.

1. Accent Reduction and Recognition Skills- Help in listening, recognizing accents, regional accent reduction, (we are assuming here that, the language of communication is English) being understood and understanding the other person's communication. India alone has 22 official languages. According to the Indian census, there are 1651 mother tongues spoken in India. Ethnologue a catalogue on world languages lists, 6909 living languages worldwide. Just by looking at these numbers, we can say that Accent Recognition Skills are a must.

2. Negotiation Skills- Used in leveraging communication, understanding behaviour, listening attentively, keen observation, conflict handling and problem solving, assuming that the negotiator has in depth knowledge of the product or service. Negotiation Skills required, are at an advanced level. The outcome has to be win win.  Clients are very sophisticated and knowledgeable these days, only the best will get the best deal. Understanding what the client is actually looking to gain, by using the product or service is the key to successful negotiations.

3. Interpersonal Skills-  Essential for team building, conflict handling, problem solving and employee relations. Though, technology and telecom industry, combined, have made us assume, that interpersonal skills are redundant, they are in fact, in greater demand, and are here to stay.

4. Presentation Skills- Used to communicate impressively, and effectively, convey information about the company and products, create interest, focus on professionalism and highlight the USP or importance of the product, service or information being conveyed. When we make a presentation, we need to keep in mind our target audience. Since the world is now a global village, it is a given that, the audience may be, from different parts of the world, so the need to prepare accordingly.

5. Cross- Culture Sensitization Skills: Used for optimizing cultural positives, acceptance of different communication styles, recognize behavioral patterns, overcome barriers to communication like stereotyping, discriminating.  Each culture has its uniqueness. There are certain things that every culture values, likes, or dislikes. It is very important, to understand, what these are, and use them to build meaningful relationships with the clients, co workers, business partners etc.

Incorporate online communication tools to strengthen communication effectiveness, and bridge the gap between time zones, space constrains, distances. These online tools, are necessary, for internal communication, as well as for communicating with collaborators and clients. These tools are blogs, video conferencing,, social networking, various forums,
newsletters, chats and email.

In conclusion in this ever changing fascinating world of Internet and Technology, the Communication Industry will always have to be geared up for the challenges thrown in by the fast paced IT Industry. We can only wonder what the future of the Communication Industry will be!
